Register a domain name from quarantine

Quarantine procedure
For many extensions, there is a quarantine procedure that takes effect when a domain name is cancelled. This procedure is intended to prevent domain names from being released that should not have been released by the owner. In general, the procedure looks like this:
  1. Expiration date
The paid registration period has ended and the owner has indicated they do not want to renew the domain name, or has not paid on time.
  2. Quarantine period
After the paid registration period has ended, the domain name enters quarantine. The length of this period depends on the extension, but is usually between 30 and 40 days. Only the owner of the domain name can reactivate the domain name during the quarantine period. Depending on the extension, this can be done through the old registrar, or through any new registrar. There may be costs associated with restoring a domain name from quarantine.
  3. Domain name is released
If the previous owner has not claimed the domain name during the quarantine period, the domain name will be released for registration by third parties. Anyone can register the domain name again. The exact time of release varies per extension.
Registering domain names at the moment they are released (the last step, also known as “drop catch”) is an interesting moment for many parties. If it is a popular domain name, it can, for example, generate money simply by placing ads on the domain’s website.

A competitor’s domain name or a relevant keyword for an existing website can also be interesting: correctly redirecting the domain name to your existing website can result in a better position in the search engines.

bHosted can help you register domain names that are released from the quarantine period. We have different procedures for this, also depending on the extension of the domain name.
Drop catching a .nl domain name from quarantine
For .nl domain names, WHOIS information can be used to retrieve the time at which the domain name will be released. SIDN releases the domain name within 1 hour after the specified time. Our drop catch method therefore means that we check at a very high frequency whether the domain name has already been released, and if so, we very quickly attempt to register the domain name. Especially for popular domain names where multiple parties want the domain name, it can be difficult to secure it.

Additional costs for securing a .nl domain name when it is released from quarantine are: € 12.50 . In addition to these drop catch costs, the usual domain registration costs are also due. No costs are due if the domain name cannot be secured.
Register a .be domain name from quarantine
For .be domain names, the DNS.be systems can be used to retrieve the day and time when the domain name will be released. From the specified time, it is then checked fully automatically whether the domain name has already been released, and if so, we very quickly attempt to register the domain name.

Costs for securing a .be domain name when it is released from quarantine are: € 10.00 . No costs are due if the domain name cannot be secured.
Register a .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info and .bz domain name from quarantine
For .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, and .bz domain names, the underlying systems know exactly (down to the second) when the domain name will be released. Of course, there is often more interest in .com domain names, because the market is larger. All of the catchers below are offered on a no-cure-no-pay basis. In case of success, the domain name will be registered for 2 years and therefore paid for 2 years of registration. Request at least 2 working days in advance.

That is also the reason why there are multiple options for this:
  1. Domain catcher “Soft”
With this catcher, one direct connection to the registry is used to try to register the domain name at the moment it is released. In addition to the 2-year domain registration costs, a € 10,- handling fee will be charged. More information or want to request it? Email info@bhosted.nl.
  2. Domain catcher “Normal”
The chance of success with this catcher is already significantly higher: not 1 connection, but 10 connections are used to try to register the domain name. In addition to the 2-year domain registration costs, a € 30,- handling fee will be charged. More information or want to request it? Email info@bhosted.nl.
  3. Domain catcher “Aggresive”
The chance of success with this catcher is considerable: in addition to our own connections, we also use the connections of various partners. In total, the number of connections used to try to secure the domain is more than 300. In addition to the 2-year domain registration costs, a € 80,- handling fee will be charged. More information or want to request it? Email info@bhosted.nl.
Prices mentioned exclude 21.0% VAT. The “Soft”, “Normal”, and “Aggressive” catchers are not available for .nl and .be domains.
